We envision a world where sustainability is as integral to a race as the start and finish lines.
Large races have staff to develop and execute eco-conscious initiatives and corporate donors to finance them. Small to mid-sized races don’t have those resources – or didn’t, until now. Racing for Sustainability provides race organizers with guidance to make their events more sustainable and the tools to do so easily and affordably.

Smaller sustainable races do exist, but it’s hard to find them.
Consumers who want to support sustainable companies can consult their websites to see if they have a third-party certification like Fairtrade or B Corp., or refer to those organizations’ directories of certified members. Certification is another resource that has only been available to races with a large staff and budget – until now.
Member races that earn Racing for Sustainability certification receive the RFS digital badge to display and are included in our directory of sustainable races, making it easy for runners to find events that align with their values.

Three reasons why your race
should become sustainable
1
It’s good for the planet.
Unless an event practices sustainability, it generates large amounts of waste that winds up in landfills, along roadsides, and in waterways. Emissions create air pollution. That all contributes to climate change.
2
It’s good for the community.
As Kayse Elmquist of the Eau Claire Marathon (an RFS-certified event) observes, “Sustainability doesn’t just mean going green – it means creating an event that people of all abilities will be able to enjoy for years to come.”
3
It’s good for the bottom line.
78% of US consumers say that a sustainable lifestyle is important to them. Runners want to patronize races that share their values and the companies that support them, making sustainable races attractive to eco-conscious sponsors. Many “green” initiatives save money, as well as resources.

Whether you’re just embarking on your environmental journey or want to increase awareness of your eco-conscious event, Racing for Sustainability will help you achieve your goals.
